An early morning fire Friday in the Comox Valley destroyed a home on Forbidden Plateau.

Dorthe Jakobsen, a fire information officer for the Coastal Fire Centre said they received information on a house fire on Forbidden Plateau Road around 3 a.m. April 17.

“We sent an officer to the area in order to prevent movement of the fire,” she explained and added as of 10:30 a.m., crews remained on scene as the fire was measured at 0.0009 ha.

As the area does not have fire protection or an agreement with the Courtenay Fire Department, crews from the department initially attended under an umbrella agreement with the centre to ensure the fire didn’t spread to nearby trees.

Jakobsen said there currently is an initial attack crew at the scene (between four to six firefighters) who will stay at the scene until the fire is out, and will return to monitor to ensure it does not reignite.

According to reports, there were people in the home who escaped as soon as the fire started. The home was located close to the former ski resort.
