It’s time to raise a glass or two as a trio of Canada’s Beer Cup judges have been announced for the 2024 competition.

Victoria local Joe Wiebe will MC the event and will help judge the competition along with Lauren Richard from Toronto and David Cole from Winnipeg.

“I look forward to working collaboratively to continue elevating the stature of Canadian craft beer,” Wiebe said.

Wiebe is an award-winning beer writer and North American Guild of Beer Writers member. He said he is looking forward to working with other judging panel members.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of this talented team.”

Canada’s Beer Cup is a non-profit national beer competition where the proceeds raised will go toward the Canadian Craft Brewers Association (CCBA), said Christine Comeau, the association’s executive director.

“By selecting three highly qualified Head Judges… we are introducing new ideas centred around providing the greatest value to brewers,” Comeau said.

Brewers who want to participate can submit entries from May 2024. The award gala will take place in October, and the location will be confirmed at a later date.

The competition will allow brewers to have constructive feedback on their products with an exhaustive scoring system, said Hilary Hoogsteen, Canada Beer Cup competition manager.

“We are bolstering the competition’s early success by introducing a new head judge model, which aims to foster collaboration, inclusivity, professional development opportunities, and competition growth,” Hoogsteen said.
