Mariners miss out on medal at soccer nationals

VIU loses, wins, loses, wins at Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships in Coquitlam

The Vancouver Island University Mariners weren’t able to end their soccer season with a national medal.

The VIU women’s team lost a bronze-medal qualifying match to the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday, 4-2, which put an end to the Mariners’ medal hopes.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships are being held this week in Coquitlam, hosted by the Douglas Royals.

The Mariners were eliminated from gold medal contention on the first day of the tournament on Wednesday when they dropped a 3-1 final to the Champlain St. Lambert Cavaliers, 3-1. Shea Battie scored for VIU.

The M’s turned that around and were 3-1 winners on Thursday as they got past the Mount St. Vincent Mystics in an “impeccable performance,” according to a CCAA press release.

Kanae Yamamoto, Battie and Kate Reynolds scored for the Mariners.

In Friday’s loss to Fanshawe, Battie scored both goals.

On Saturday, VIU edged the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks 1-0 on a late goal from Nicole Foglietta.

The Mariners had qualified for nationals by winning the Pacific Western Athletic Association championship in Burnaby in late October.
