The countdown is on for the World Rowing Coastal Championships (WRCC), and they still need volunteers. Hundreds of international rowers descend upon Sidney for the event Oct. 11-14, and an army of volunteers must be recruited.

According to Anne Linton, volunteer co-ordinator for the WRCC, they are looking for a broad range of volunteers to drive boats, register athletes, co-ordinate communications and media, organize and assist rowers with their boats, check bags, and more. There are openings in almost all volunteer positions, with a choice of morning or afternoon shifts ranging from 5-6 hours long.

“We’re sort of going full-bore from Tuesday the 9th through the 14th,” said Linton.

For some jobs, physical ability is important because boats can be heavy. Boats can be up to 400 pounds, and need to be maneuvered up and down the boat ramp at Tulista Park. They will be on wheels, but they are heavy, and they could be water-logged. Many other jobs, though, do not depend on physical strength, including providing information to spectators. No rowing experience or knowledge is necessary for most positions. Volunteers will get a clear view of the races, because the course follows the shoreline.

“It’ll give them an opportunity to see a different sort of event of rowing. It’s quite different than what we do on Elk Lake or down on the Gorge. It’s a bit more rough and tumble,” said Linton.

To register, visit wrcc2018.com/volunteers and send questions to volunteer@wrcc2018.com. People can also register to volunteer on the day.
