DCS Chargers get bronze at Highland boys tournament

Chargers beat Brooks in third-place game

The Duncan Christian School Chargers got the senior boys basketball season off to an excellent start by winning the bronze medal at the Highland Tournament in Comox last weekend.

The Chargers got by Powell River’s Brooks Secondary Thunderbirds 62-59 in the third-place game. Josaia Nolin led DCS with 20 points and five rebounds, while Matt Brandsma scored 14 to earn Player of the Game honours. Nick Harder and Vince Fernandez each scored seven points and added four assists, and Fernandez also had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Chargers opened the tournament with a 49-45 win over Ucluelet behind a 13-point outing by Player of the Game Nolin. Nick Harder also hit double digits with 11 points. Fernandez scored nine and tied Nolin and Matt Brandsma for the team lead with seven boards. Brandsma added a team-high three assists.

The lone loss for DCS came against Pacific Christian, the eventual tournament champions. The Chargers were beaten 74-33 by the strong PCS team. Ben Henry paced DCS with nine points and tied Harder, Brandsma and Ben Kapteyn with a team-best three rebounds.
