The cancellation of the Crofton Fire Department’s Charity Mixed Slo-Pitch Tournament is a big loss for the organizations it supports.
The annual event at the Crofton Ball Park would have been coming up soon in early July, but was called off long ago because the department requires several months of lead time to ensure everything’s in place.
With the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, there’s no way that was going to happen.
“It’s pandemic for everybody,” conceded fire department member and tournament organizer Rick Smith.
Last year’s event featured 14 teams and yielded proceeds of around $4,000. “It’s probably one of the better weekends we’ve had,” Smith at that time.

That money was distributed among the Victoria Burn Unit, Muscular Dystrophy, the Chemainus Crofton Community Schools Association and other local community charities.
There’s no way that money can be made up for those groups that are suffering a hardship from the many events cancelled by the pandemic.
