Grade 11 Belmont student, Layla Martinez, will be telling the story of how she scored two points in a basketball game for years to come.
Belmont’s senior girls’ basketball team successfully executed a trick play against Oak Bay in the City tournament this week.
This was Martinez’ first year playing basketball. Many of the girls on the basketball team also play rugby, so head coach Brad Lidstone drew up an out of bounds baseline play similar to a rugby lineout where the girls lifted Martinez into the air to catch the ball. She banked it in for two and made it look like she had done that play 100 times before.
The basket was taken back, because rules are you cannot lift a teammate to score.

“As coaches, we thought it was a good opportunity to try something fun in a game,” Lidstone said. “Belmont basketball is all about making memories, and I’m sure the girls will remember this one for a long time.”
