For anyone who has experienced romance in Victoria, the idea that we are living in Canada’s Most Romantic City doesn’t come as a surprise.
With many restaurants featuring a cozy atmosphere, a plethora of natural viewscapes that inspire heartfelt wonder, and other locations that lend themselves well to romantic experiences, there’s no shortage of opportunities to make an impression on a significant other or start a new relationship on a positive note.
News this week that online retailing giant Amazon had placed our fair city at the top of the list of most romantic cities in Canada for a sixth straight year, based on sales of certain products, left us with a sense of chagrin. Mainly because such narrow criteria fall well short of describing the true sense of romanticism around Victoria.
The people who bought the romantic comedy films, relationship helper books or sexual wellness enhancement products from Amazon are, for the most part, using these items in the privacy of their own homes.
But we’d like to think that what makes for a romantic city is the variety of ways one can show their affection to their significant other, and that, just as often as not, means going out together to enjoy what the city has to offer.
The nice part about that idea is that not every shared experience with a loved one needs requires a major outlay of cash. One can find passion through shared interests, volunteering, playing sports together and other activities like dancing, mountain climbing or meditation, each of which is available in our city.
If you do feel inclined to spend a little money on your sweetie, especially with Valentine’s Day approaching, we’ve got great florists here, awesome choclatiers and as mentioned, some great restaurants to choose from. While it’s kind of nice when outsiders call us romantic, being proactive and doing it ourselves is a lot more fun.
