January 26, 1928 - October 31, 2020
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa, William (Bill) Whyte. Bill passed away peacefully in Nanaimo at the age of 92 years.
Bill grew up in Vancouver with his brothers Gord and Jack and his parents William and Lillian Whyte. He loved sports and with talent, discipline and hard work he excelled. He played baseball professionally for five years and during his years at UBC, Bill played both baseball and rugby. Bill is an inductee to the UBC Sports Hall of Fame.
While at university, Bill met Eleanor Cave. They married and loved and cared for each other for 68 years. Together they had four children David, Ron (RJ), Barbara and Valerie.
Upon graduating Bill began his long and prestigious career as an educator with the Vancouver School Board. Throughout his career he was known to be fair, caring and practical. He believed building relationships was the key to a successful educator.
Bill's greatest love was for Eleanor and their family. He attended every sporting and artistic event he could, taking a genuine interest in each endeavour his children and grandchildren chose to pursue.
Bill had many friends with whom he had great times. His quick wit and cheekiness put smiles on our faces right to the very end.
We would like to thank the staff of Berwick on the Lake and the Brio Care Unit for your wonderful care of Bill.
At this time there will not be a service. For those wishing to honour Bill's memory with a donation, please consider UBC Athletics; memorial.support.ubc.ca/bill-whyte or a charity of your choice.
