In loving memory of Tom Dunn, who died peacefully at The Views in Comox, British Columbia at the age of 86.
The son of Loran Austin Dunn and Eleanor Ann Ahles, Tom was born and raised in St. Cloud, Minnesota until they moved to Winslow, Arizona where he attended high school. He received a BS degree with honors from the University of Arizona at Tucson and went on to attend the University of Southern California to become a Board-certified Pharmacist.
He met and married his first wife, Lee Hartley, and raised two children Thomas Christopher Dunn and Lueleanor Leslie Aline Gambon ('nee Dunn) in California. His second marriage to Shirley Elizabeth Dunn ('nee Haseldon) also started in California and continued on Vancouver Island where they moved to retire. He lived out his retirement on the island and proudly earned his dual US/Canadian citizenship while a resident there.
While Tom was hardworking and serious about his values and convictions, he will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. When his children were little, he would entertain them with funny faces and silly games. He passed his love of puns and comics to his daughter Leslie. He will also be remembered for his love of art and reading, as well as music, especially jazz.
Tom had a lifelong love of sports. He coached his son's soccer teams and taught his daughter to play tennis. He played tennis and enjoyed cycling well into his later years. Tom also traveled the world extensively. He met Shirley on a tour of China and they subsequently had many adventures together all over the globe.
Tom always enjoyed a good meal and a great dessert. A chocoholic until the end, he was also addicted to Shirley's homemade jam. After he retired from retail pharmacy, Shirley helped him to conquer his phobia of cooking and he learned to love preparing her dinner from time to time.
Tom is survived by his wife Shirley Dunn of Comox, son Thomas Dunn and daughter Leslie Gambon, her husband Paul Gambon and his stepsons Martin Currie, Glenn Currie, his wife Becky. Tom also leaves behind four grandchildren, Ryan, Nicole, John and Sophia.
His daughter would like to thank Dr. Lisa Benson for the wonderful care and understanding that she provided over the years. She would also like to thank the staff of The Views who provided him with such loving kindness over the last years of his life. You were there for him when she couldn't be.
There will be no service, just take a moment to remember him the next time you enjoy your favorite dessert.
