Miranda Cynthia

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Cynthia Miranda on May 1, 2019.
Cynthia, nOe Azavedo, was born in Kenya where her father served in the British military. Cynthia attended a convent boarding school in her parents' homeland of Goa, a former Portuguese colony in India. Cynthia received a prestigious scholarship to attend college in London, England. She returned to Nairobi, Kenya after graduation and got a job as personal secretary to an up and coming politician at the time.
Cynthia met and married Tom Miranda and lived in Mombasa, Kenya, where Tom was teaching in a college. In 1969, they escaped the political turmoil in east Africa and emigrated to Canada, subsequently settling in Simcoe, Ontario. Cynthia spent many years working as an office assistant in the adult mental health system. Cynthia and Tom retired to Vancouver Island in 1999. Over the past two decades, Cynthia has been an active member of our community including roles as a senior peer counsellor, Probus club member, bridge player, book club & garden club member, folk dancer and parishioner.
Predeceased by husband Tom (2008), and brother Peter Azavedo (2013), Cynthia leaves behind her sisters Maura (John) D'Costa, Florinda (Mirek) Kotisa and Dr. Joyce de Azavedo. Her memory will live on in her children Dr. Charmaine (Neil) Miranda, Dr. Trevor (Cheryl) Miranda and Dr. Terence (Sonya) Miranda and her grandchildren Nyah, Sophie, Kyan, Alexa, Yvonne, Mila and Katia.
Many thanks to Cynthia's physicians Drs. Lisa and Jean-Marie Wilson for their compassionate care. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Monday, May 20th, 2019 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (790 Kilmalu Road, Mill Bay, BC). Interment will occur after the mass and then a celebration of life will follow at Arbutus Ridge golf and country club (3515 Telegraph Rd., Cobble Hill, BC) starting at approximately 12:45 pm.
