It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mavis Martin (nee Bartholomew) at the age of 102. She passed away peacefully in the home that she loved so much in Qualicum Beach. Mavis is survived by her sister Doreen, daughter Celia (Dave), sons Leland, Regan (Jan) and Owen (Tammy), her grandchildren Jeff, Dylan, Shane, Cole (Annika), Zakary and Bianca (Justin), her great-grandchildren Jailah, Gage, Khloe, Nevaeh, Bristol and Brailey and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mavis is predeceased by her first husband Cecil Myers, son Kevin Myers, sister Nora Wood and second husband James Martin.
Mavis was born in New Westminster and joined the RCAF at age 19 during WWII where she worked as a wireless operator. She was then posted in many areas of Canada including Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Vancouver where she was discharged in 1945. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #49 and met many of her lifelong friends there.
In 1945 she married Cecil Myers in Vancouver and became the proud mother of 5 children. After Cecil passed away in 1974, she went on to work at Sears and later at the Holiday Inn. She retired to Parksville on Vancouver Island in 1980 where she lived in a home on the ocean. She met her second husband James (Jim) Martin in 1996 and married a year later at the age of 77. Sadly, Jim passed away in 1999. Mavis also survived breast cancer in her mid-80s but didn't let that stop her from enjoying every day. She loved to travel, go to air force conventions, garden, cook and sew. Her favourite time of year was Christmas and she always loved to spoil everyone around her.
Mavis got the cruising bug with Jim and continued cruising later with some of her best friends until she could no longer travel. She was known for her beautiful head of platinum blonde hair, going to the hairdresser every week until she passed. She was often complimented on how well she dressed and always looked many years younger than she actually was. She enjoyed her outings and especially going for lunch with her friends.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2023 at the Legion Branch #49. Her ashes will be spread by the family over the ocean she loved so much.
