Lance Donald Bean

February 20, 1941 – August 23, 2022
In loving memory ~
Lance passed away quietly on August 23rd and is mourned by his Shawnigan Lake School “family” and the many students and others he taught, mentored, and befriended at both Shawnigan Lake and Brentwood College Schools.
He was born in Reading, England and in 1963 received his Certificate of Education in French and Art (with Distinction) from the University of London. For the next ten years he worked in England and France, teaching and performing and in 1974 began teaching at Shawnigan Lake School as Housemaster, and Head of Modern Languages, Art and Music. He took the position of Director of Admissions at Brentwood in 1982 where he stayed until 2001.
Lance returned to teach at Shawnigan in 2002 and once again made the same impact as he had previously. Shortly thereafter, he undertook the project of creating the Shawnigan Lake School Museum which has drawn gasps of admiration right from the first day it was completed.
Lance was a true Renaissance Man with hugely diverse interests; His particular love was Jazz, and he formed numerous bands and groups and took many on successful tours around the Province and down the West Coast of the U.S.
Lance had that special gift that the very best educators share of being able to connect meaningfully and often transformatively with the young people that he taught and mentored. After fully retiring in 2012 he has been living quietly in Duncan on Vancouver Island.
Pre-deceased by his parents and brother, he leaves his sisters and several nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of his life and of the music he loved at Shawnigan on a date to be announced.
