March 18, 1953 - October 20, 2022
In loving memory ~
On Oct 20, 2022 our sweet brother passed from complications of a surgery 2 ½ months earlier. He was just 69 years old.
We his sisters Bev, Lynne, Janice, Lolli, his brother Gerry and "adopted" brother Roger, his best friend Greg and his nieces and nephews miss him so very much.
Ken was born in Winnipeg but moved to the Valley at age 4 when our dad was posted to the Comox Air Base.
As a young fella' he worked at Fields Sawmill and the pulp mill in Campbell River.
Unfortunately at around 21 years of age Ken was diagnosed with schizophrenia - a devastating illness that caused him indescribable suffering. But thank goodness in his older years practically all of his symptoms had left him and he was finally able to be his true self.
To describe Ken accurately family members and friends were asked to give one or two words on how they saw him...resilient, sweet, delightful, hilarious, giving of his love, cool uncle, loyal friend, man of many talents, friendly, phenomenal, gentle, loving, funny, curious, creative, kind hearted, the best hugs, inspiring, witty, helpful, explorer, very generous, amateur astronomer, writer of songs and poetry, builder of model planes...the list could go on and on.
Ken could be seen most days riding around on his big red scooter. Every day except snow days he would drive to the Driftwood Mall and have coffee at Cinnabons with his friends and then visit more friends who worked in the many businesses and stores there. On his way home he would stop and chat with even more friends and acquaintances.
A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and care aids at our hospital in Courtenay who did such a great job of caring for him. They had such good things to say about Ken - the jokes, the songs, the poetry!
A special thank you to his friend and pastor Murray Coulter who would visit Ken in the hospital at all hours of the day and night to bring him solace.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Ken on Saturday December 17 at 11 a.m. at the Eureka Clubhouse on 4th Street in Courtenay. If you knew Ken and can make it that would be great. And if you have a story to share about Ken even better but not necessary. FMI phone Janice at 778 992 0299.
