October 23, 1947 - December 31, 2022
In loving memory ~
James (Jim) Phillippo Rich Saunders passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on Saturday, December 31, 2022.
Born in North Seaton, England on October 23, 1947, Jim spent his formative years in Victoria, B.C., Dartmouth, NS., Key West, FL, and Vancouver, B.C. as his father rotated through deployments with the Royal Canadian Navy.
Loving husband of Christine, father to Matthew and Huw, brother to Janice and Patrick (Karen), and uncle to Jenny, Michael, and Rebecca. Jim is survived by cousins and extended family in Canada, US, Australia, and the UK.
He met Christine in 1970 and they married in 1972, living in Vancouver with their sons until moving to Courtenay in 1994.
Jim was known to many not just for his strength in family, but as a father figure to friends of the family (Terra and Fabian), a leader in Scouting and an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist. He was known for his skill in stained glass, woodworking, dahlia growing, general handiwork and had recently finished his first book about his beloved cats.
While Jim had been dealing with a plethora of chronic health conditions for several decades, it is not his ill health that he will be remembered for, but his spirit in trying times. Despite facing numerous grim prognoses at various times, the sense of humour and optimism he imbued in those around him will live on indefinitely. When Jim believed in you, you believed in yourself.
A Celebration of Life will take place in Comox in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an animal rescue organization in your community, in Jim's name.
