Helen Auld Washington (nee Rankin), born January 15 1924 in Winnipeg Manitoba, passed away at her home in Mill Bay on January 28 2024, 13 days after celebrating her 100th birthday. At her side were her sons: Robert and Keith. Helen had been a resident of Mill Bay since 1962. In the 1970's she and her husband Jack subdivided the "estate" property they lived on, known as "Homewood", into the "Keparo" subdivision. She named the roads (Keparo etc.) and when the drilling for the water supply came up dry she "witched" the water well that is currently used. A very private individual, Helen was well-known for her independence and was respected throughout the community. She had a love for all animals, dogs especially, and when once asked how many dogs she had over the years she suggested it could be "up to a hundred". She gave money to the SPCA and other charities that she favored. She loved gardening and tending her flowers. She was a voracious reader and even when she could no longer drive had the library drop off books every week. Her resolute independence had her driving until she was 95. She remained fully mobile until a stroke in the spring of 2022 when she then became bedridden and was forced to rely on her daily caregivers for all her needs. An inspiration to all, elevated to the matriarch of the Washington family upon the tragic death of her husband Jack in 1989, she served as an example of courage and determination to us all. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Ella, brother Robert, daughter Louise, husband Jack, and her son Paul. She will be dearly missed by her sons: Robert, Keith (Heather); grandchildren: Anneliese (Kevin), Everett (Kelly), and Nicole (Colin), and her great-grandchildren: Bradley, Owen, and Callie; and her two closest confidants and friends: Louise and RonaLee. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 24th at Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club, 3515 Telegraph Road, Cobble Hill from 3:00-5:00 PM.
