June 6, 1932 - June 29, 2021
Harold Arron Austin of Nanaimo, BC passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at the age of 89 years.
Harold was born in Calgary, AB, to Mary and David Austin on June 6, 1932. He went to high school at Crescent Heights and graduated in 1950 before attending University of BC to earn a B.Sc. in Meteorology in 1953. He followed this with numerous courses through Canadian Forces School of Meteorology. Harold earned a B.Ed. from the University of Alberta in 1972 but continued to take courses well into his senior years wherever he lived.
He worked across Canada as a meteorologist for the Canadian Federal Government for thirty-four years at the end of which he received a citation for personifying the word "service." He particularly enjoyed classical music, reading and racquet sports. Harold was involved in investment clubs and very generously supported multiple charities.
Harold is survived by his sister Zelda Hanson of Calgary, niece and nephews, Sam (Gail), Anne (Gerry), Harris (Kyra) and Gary (Leslie); nine great-nieces and nephews, their partners and children, and by his large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, brother-in-law Morris Hanson and great-niece Heather HansonA Private Graveside Service will be held at the 37th Street Jewish Cemetery, (North East Corner of Highway 22X & 37 Street SW, Calgary, AB).
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Johannes Olivier, Block Watch and Harold's wonderful friends and neighbours in Nanaimo for helping him stay in his own home until the end.
