February 22, 2021
Grant Douglas Hunter left us in the early hours of Monday 22nd February 2021. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife, Deborah, and two sons, Stephen (Ria) and Nick.
Grant was born and grew up in Port Alberni. Of the stories he would tell in his lifetime, his glory days with his friends at Paper Mill Dam, and playing basketball for ADSS were ranked high along with the greatest job he ever had when he was a teenager...being paid to watch cement dry for the city.
His interests were all sports but his passion was basketball. Until he met Deb in 1984. They lived in London, England for 4 years, during which time Grant travelled to Africa, Northern Ireland and Russia to name a few countries, and where their first son was born in 1989.
Grant moved his family back to Canada in 1990. He was employed at BC Ferries where he enjoyed working with the very best people, namely his last ever crew. He actively took on many roles in the community and continued to realise his original passion of playing (Nanaimo Masters) and refereeing basketball. Their second son was born in 1999, and with his family complete, Grant lived his life actively participating and watching his sons grow up. By all accounts, Grant was loved, respected and considered to be truly a kind, strong, caring man to all who knew him. As well as leaving his immediate family, he leaves his brother Marc Hunter (Angie, Joel and Akela) in Port Alberni.
Due to covid restrictions there will be no service. On a beautiful sunny day, Grant's family gathered in Port Alberni in his honour.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all who sent flowers, cards, and loving messages, they were greatly appreciated.
