January 31, 1925 - May 24, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Doreen Demidoff. Doreen was born in Newport Wales to Ivor and Olwyn Roberts.
Doreen was a war bride. She met her future husband Sydney Demidoff when he was stationed in Wales for training. At the end of the war, they were married and moved to Canada. After living in several communities on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland they moved to Campbell River in 1955 and raised their three children.
Despite having suffered from polio in 1952 Doreen lived a full life and contributed to the community in many ways. She taught swimming lessons at the Rotary Beach pool and then at the outdoor pool in Centennial Park when it was built.
She was a Girl Guide leader for several years. She and Sydney were members of the square-dancing club. They were avid gardeners and helped create the first Campbell River Garden Club around 1960.
Mom loved sewing and crafts. After buying Vogue Fabrics in 1972 she enjoyed working there for about 10 years. She loved doing needlework and shared her knowledge in classes at the Community Hall. She also enjoyed many years of involvement with the Women's Institute helping to make many quilts for raffles.
Doreen and Syd loved camping, taking their two cats Sherpa and Lucy with them on their travels. They loved nature and were avid bird watchers.
Doreen in predeceased by Sydney, her husband of 67 years, her brother Eric (Nora) and son-in-law Larry Harwood. She is survived by her son John and daughters Pat Harwood and Sandra; her grandchildren Lisa, Jacqueline, Jennifer (Charles), Eugene (Chrissy) and Jolene (Rob); great-grandchildren Byron, Natalie, Kaiden, Charles, Cayley, Sidney, Paige and Samantha.
After suffering a stroke in 2011 Doreen became a resident at Yucalta Lodge. We would like to thank the staff for the wonderful care she received and Dr. Walker for his care over the years.
