April 26, 2022
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that Donald Robert Hilchey passed away on April 26, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, Genevieve and George Hilchey, his wife Irene, as well as his siblings Irene and Kenneth. He leaves behind his children Kenneth (Kristina), Danny and Sabrina (Steve), his grandchildren, Bobby, Alanna, Matthew, Shaun, Kyle, Ryan and Nathan, and 2 great grandchildren Micah and Ebony. Don was also grandpa to Irene's 10 grandchildren.
Don was raised in a military household. His Dad was a World War II vet and his sister was also in the Army. Don joined the Canadian Guards in 1955 and met and married Barbara in Germany with whom he had his 3 children. After 23 years Don retired from the Army then worked for Canada Post and as a Sessional Officer at the BC Legislature. In 1992 Don married Irene and they relocated to Comox in 2004 where Don was known as the "egg man" selling Farmer Ben's Eggs to over 100 friends in the area. He also worked for many years driving cars for Enterprise logging thousands of miles. He was always busy and would fit in all his other activities around golf, a sport he played and excelled at since the 70's, and he was a proud member of the Vancouver and Quadra No. 2 Masonic Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
It was always said that he looked good in uniform and he certainly wore it well. Also he was a Kenny Rogers look alike "performing" as Kenny on numerous occasions to the delight of the audience. Don was very regimented, honest, caring, straight up and funny. He had a great sense of humour, even in his last few days.
He was loved very much by his family, Irene's daughters and his grandchildren. To his many many friends in Victoria, at the Gorge Vale Golf Course, in Comox, the 888 Wing Comox, the Masonic Lodge and his Canadian Guards Army buddies, THANK YOU so much for your friendship to our Dad and us. We wish to especially thank his friend Jim Scott and Dr. Ed Howard for their amazing help and care particularly these last few months.
A celebration of life will be held at the 888 Wing, Comox, Saturday May 21st 2-5pm.
