June 6, 1949 - September 7, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Grumpy, Uncle and friend to many. Donald Cameron, (Cam), McKinnon was born on June 6, 1949 in Vancouver to Margaret (Peggy) and Donald George (Bill) McKinnon. Dad spent his early childhood in Vancouver where his father was Manager of Lucky Lager in New Westminster. His family then moved to Port Alberni in 1958 where his Dad, Bill started his own Liquor Distributing Company. Dad graduated from ADSS in 1968 and then began his career in the transportation industry. He worked briefly for his Dad's distributing company where he got his start in professional driving. He then moved on to CP Transport where he spent many years driving truck. At the age of 30 he was hired by Western Bus Lines, which later became Diversified Transportation, driving Charter Bus. After a few years of this, Dad wanted to be home more for his children and switched to driving transit bus with BC Transit and eventually moving his way up to Driver Trainer and Instructor with BC Transit. This was his career for the last 39 years of his life until he finally retired last year at the age of 69.
Dad had such a deep love for his family; an incredible sense of humour and a great passion for is career. He never ended a conversation with us without saying 'I love you". He enjoyed his social connections he made with passengers on the bus and became such a well known person in the community. Everyone knew 'Cam the bus driver'. Dad enjoyed traveling, taking long walks in the Log Train Trail, spending time taking in the beautiful scenery at the Quays and Sproat Lake, sitting at home with his crossword puzzles and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
Dad is predeceased by his Father Bill, Mother Peggy and sister Laraine. He is survived by his daughters Kristine (Darrin), Theresa (Mike), Catherine (Bo) and his precious grandchildren Brett and Caitlyn and step-grandchildren Jasmine and Ashlee. He also leaves behind his much loved nephews David Stolz (Joni) and Jon Stolz, and niece Sue Mitchell (Jono) as well as great-nieces Stevie Rae, Emma, Keisha and Helena and great-nephews Christian and Nicholas.
Dad was so very loved by his girls, grandchildren and nieces and nephews and always will be. He will truly be missed. Our lives are so very blessed and enriched by having him in it. When you think of Dad, Cam, remember that big smile, bright green eyes, infectious laugh, witty sense of humour and that big wave out the bus window....Oh! and the perfect hair...we can't forget the hair!
Thank you to all the nurses and care aides at WCGH for caring for our father and to Ty Watson House for making his final days comfortable and at ease. He was at peace.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Ty Watson House.
Love you Dad Forever!
