Alan Stanley May

March 16, 1925 – April 17, 2021
Alan was born and raised in Manchester England. He served valiantly in the second world war as a proud Merchant Marine. Once the war ended he wedded and emigrated to South Africa for 15 years where their two sons were born.
Leaving behind many harrowing memories they returned to Cornwall England to help family run a successful resort (Summerleaze Beach Hotel). In 1972 they arrived by Ship via the St. Lawrence and set foot on Canadian soil, by train and settled in Richmond BC where Alan got his Real Estate License.
Ten years later they settled in the Cowichan Valley in 1982 with the purchase of Rosebank Court, hands in with family in the Coopers Restaurant and Nightshift. Living at Acacia Lodge (Trillium) in Shawnigan Lake since his decision in August 2020 unable to fully care for himself.
He is survived by his wife Ruby of 74 years, Son Allan (Lilleith) of Roberts Creek, Son Brian (Joan) of Shawnigan Lake. Brother David (Barbara), Nephew Stephen (Melanie), Niece Anna (Stuart) and many cousins in Australia.
Niece Susan of Duncan, Nephew Phil (Debbie) of Cobble Hill not to mention five grandchildren Sheldon (Kate), Courtney, Yelaina (Curtis), Devan, Tessa and two great grandchildren (Quinn and Jade) and another on the way. Many cousins, relatives, friends across BC, AB, England, South Africa and Australia.
A proud Veteran, Freemason, he volunteered selflessly, marching proudly at the Cobble Hill Cenotaph until 2019 and worked a many hour for the British pensioners.
Alan was a kind and honest man devoted to his wife and family to the very last. We would like to send our thanks out to all those caregivers who helped Alan during his last year at home.
Our family from deep within our hearts would like to thank the staff of Acacia Lodge (Trillium) for their kindness and love that they have shown Alan.
Ruby once wrote: Alan and I have spent many years of happiness together, coasting the waves of joy and of sadness, success and disappointments, partings and reunions. I guess we came through it all because of love, trust and respect for each other.
At 96 he lived a full, rich and positive life and will be missed by us all.Obituary
