November 2, 1932 - May 26, 2023
In loving memory ~
Alan Quarmby died peacefully on Friday, May 26, 2023. Alan was born in Victoria, BC and moved to Duncan at the age of nine with his mother and sister. They lived in Glenora where he would eventually work at Gerry Wellburn's sawmill and then at Bob King's sawmill. He also 'ran Cat' before finally settling on being a plumber. He operated Quarmby Plumbing and Heating from 1968 until his retirement. His skill set was so much more than his chosen trade. There was nothing he couldn't build or fix whether it be of metal, wood, wire or pipe. In his early years, he built a tractor from salvaged parts from a Model T Ford and a couple of well-used grader tires. He and "Ol' Smokey" cleared land and pulled logs like a well-synchronized team.
Sawmilling was one of his favourite pastimes. He would eventually build his own mill and use it to cut the lumber for two of his own houses, a few others, as well as some barns in Glenora. He was always a hard worker but for Al, work was a pleasure. He was a generous man and will be remembered by family, friends and community as a strong, kind and intelligent man ready to pitch in and give a hand.
Alan and Emily resided in Glenora until the early 90s when they moved to Honeymoon Bay.
Alan is predeceased by his sister Marion Laird. He is survived by his wife of four months shy of 70 years, Emily, his daughter Lynne, son Glen (Vickie), and grandchildren Beth (Bobby) Nowak, Elise (Mike) Meakin, Brian Quarmby and Jacob Sheehy (Olive) and two great-grandsons Hudson and Evan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cerwydden Care Home for their care of Dad these past couple of years.
There will be a gathering for family and friends at a date to be announced later this summer.
