Residents around the Harbour City spent some of their Sunday digging out from the snow.
Approximately 10 centimetres of snow fell in Nanaimo late Saturday night and early Sunday morning according to Environment Canada, and twice that amount in many areas of the city.
City of Nanaimo plows were out since the wee hours of the morning and according to a social media post from the city, priority routes are now in good condition and crews were moving on to secondary and residential roads.
“Temperatures are expected to drop tonight to below zero, icy roads will be a result,” the post noted. “Drive with due care and attention for the conditions.”

As a result of this latest round of snow, B.C. Hydro was reporting power outages in neighbourhoods along Doumont Road and Jordan Avenue, with more than 3,0000 customers affected, mostly on Gabriola Island. As of this evening, there were still about 1,000 customers without power.
“Strong winds and snowfall throughout the night have caused extensive damage and multiple outages to customers in the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island,” notes a B.C. Hydro outage update. “Crews are working in all regions and restoration times will be provided once full damage assessments are complete.”

RDN Transit tweeted out that service along Seventh Street, Ninth Street, Howard Avenue, Westwood Road, Wills Road and Hallen Avenue was cancelled due to the weather. They also said riders should expect delays throughout Sunday. Regular service has now resumed on all routes.
Meanwhile, Vancouver Island University tweeted out this morning that the Nanaimo campus along with Milner Gardens was closed, but advised at 2:30 p.m. that campus would re-open for the evening.
Environment Canada has ended snowfall warnings. Temperatures are forecast to fall to -8 overnight.
