A Parksville restaurant’s grand opening was delayed after a runaway truck crashed into the building.
Jordan Porth was working on some last-minute touch-ups on July 5, when he heard his wife screaming outside.
“The delivery guy was running after the five ton truck, trying to jump in,” said Porth, who, with his wife Sherri, own and operate Happy Jack’s Restaurant, located at Wembley Mall opposite Oceanside Place. “And so my wife just happened to look and see the truck coming at the building with this guy running behind.”
Porth made it outside just in time to see a five-ton truck crash into the side of the restaurant.
“It kind of caved in the wall a bit and took the roof out,” he said.

The truck had been parked by nearby Oceanside Place for a delivery, but unfortunately rolled down towards Happy Jack’s. The five-ton damaged the building’s wall and roof.
The driver was ticketed for Undue Care and Attention under the Motor Vehicle Act, according to Sgt. Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP. The vehicle was removed and ordered to undergo a complete vehicle inspection.
“We’re just glad nobody got hurt,” Porth said, adding the truck could have ended up on the Island Highway, if it hadn’t hit the building.
The restaurant was able to open its doors the next day.
