Firefighters from the City of Nanaimo and Cedar are on scene at the Harmac Pacific mill battling a industrial landfill fire.

Crews were called out at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday and were stationed on Phoenix Way, near the mill site, said Tim Doyle, Nanaimo Fire Rescue deputy chief of operations.

“We have just the Harmac landfill, deep-seated fire, approximately 300 feet by 300 feet,” said Doyle. “We were notified about the fire approximately 10:30 a.m., so we’ve been on scene since then. We’re going to be on scene, we don’t know how long, when this is going to be concluded, definitely into the weekend.”

Doyle said approximately 20-25 personnel were on scene, which included members from Harmac crew, North Cedar Fire Department and Nanaimo Fire Rescue. It wasn’t a major fire, he said.

“This isn’t going anywhere, it’s just deep-seated so it’s very difficult,” said Doyle. “We also have heavy equipment up there – an excavator and bulldozer – assisting us with trying to get down to see the fire and put it out.”
