Nanaimo Fire Rescue is continuing its investigation into the cause of a fire that sent one man to hospital Tuesday.
Stu Kenning, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief of operations, said the investigation to determine the cause of the fire was continuing, but it started in a shed behind a house at 2515 Quill Dr.
Kenning said the alarm initially came in as a miscellaneous fire, but was upgraded to a structure fire as fire crews responding to the scene saw flames. One man was living in the structure, Kenning described as a shed, that caught on fire.
“By then [the fire] was pretty much dug and the shed was basically done and it sort of extended up into the house,” Kenning said. “There was significant smoke damage to the house, but not that much fire damage. Basically, one corner of the house has fire damage.”
Kenning confirmed a man and woman and their three dogs, who were living in the house have been displaced by the fire. They have no insurance and have been given temporary lodging through the city’s Emergency Social Services program.
The man who was living in the shed was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be treated for burns to his legs, Kenning described as significant, and smoke inhalation.
