The B.C. Historical Federation presented the Victoria-based B.C. Black History Awareness Society with an Award of Merit for their work in raising awareness of Black history in B.C. since its inception in 1994.
On Saturday, May 4, the federation held its annual conference awards gala in Chilliwack which aims to recognize and honour societies, organizations and individuals for their achievements and contributions relating to the preservation and education of B.C. history.
The BCBHAS celebrates historical and contemporary achievements and contributions in the arts, education, government, sports, science and other sectors, and recent projects undertaken by the Society include the development of the Hope Meets Action travelling exhibition in partnership with the Royal BC Museum and the BC Archives Black History Records Research Guide.
In a social media post, they said they were “honoured” to receive the award.
Although the BCBHAS started in the 1990s, its roots go back to the mid-70s as the Victoria Black Peoples Society, which tried to bring together people who not only had an interest in B.C.’s black history, but they were also looking for a community to develop and nurture and interest in black history for their children.
