No one was hurt as a fire burned through landscaping and caused some damage to a house on Hammond Bay Road this afternoon.
Emergency personnel were called to the 5200 block of Hammond Bay Road at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14.
The fire burned a fence and landscaping and damaged the siding of a home before crews snuffed out the blaze.
Acting Capt. Matt Burke, of Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but confirmed two houses suffered damage from the fire that caught in a hedge bordering a driveway between the two homes. A minivan also suffered damage from the heat of the burning hedge, but it was moved prior to the firefighters’ arrival on scene.
“The fire started with the cedar hedge … and went into the neighbouring van and some children’s boats on the side of the house,” Burke said. “It melted off some siding … and didn’t get into any of the structures. One homeowner sustained some superficial burns trying to put it out, but no major injuries.”
The fire captain expected none of the residents will be displaced by the fire.
