A Vancouver Island dance duo has proven its calibre and is now only one step away from the largest cash prize in Canadian television history.
During a semifinals broadcast of the televised talent competition series Canada’s Got Talent on Tuesday, May 7, Jacksun Fryer and Carlow Rush – also known as Funkanometry – survived the dreaded semifinals elimination round, according to a press release from Rogers Communications.
The two first appeared on the series April 2 with a routine that started off with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama and changed to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. On May 7, the duo showed off their funky moves and grooved to a synchronized and harmonized routine to a cover of Lipps Inc.’s Funkytown.
Once again, the show’s judges, Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Trish Stratus and Kardinal Offishall had nothing but praise following their performance.
“I think you are the act that I want to see over and over and over and over again,” Singh said. “Like, you are so fun to watch and I feel like the world and Canada would want to see you perform.”
Stratus referred to Nanaimo’s Fryer and Duncan’s Rush as not only dancers, but storytellers, comedians and “exactly what the million dollar season needed.”
“Even though you took it back to Howie’s time with Funkytown, you guys made it feel very young, very youthful,” Offishall said.
According to the release, Funkanometry is so far the only act from British Columbia to make the final cut, and one of only six acts selected yesterday. Of the 14 that were announced as semifinalists, four were sent home and four were sent to the public vote so viewers can determine their fate – which includes the singer from Mission, Eshan Sobti.
Now that the duo will find themselves on the final stage, they’ll soon need help from their fans to win it all and take the grand prize of $1 million dollars back to the Island.

The voting period will open during the live two-hour finale, airing Tuesday, May 14, at 8 p.m. on the CityTV channel, streamed on the app CityTV Plus, or on the website www.citytv.com.
