Sue Doman has changed the way that people look at choral music.
An accomplished choral director and vocalist, Doman got a little tired of people assuming that choral presentations were the stuff of classical or religious compositions. That’s why, in 2008, she started Victoria’s Starlight Pops, a mixed-voice pops choir that is more likely to belt out a Dan Fogelberg or Beach Boys tune than anything by Handel or Vivaldi.
And Victoria will have a chance to enjoy Doman’s innovative take on the choral experience when Starlight Pops hosts its latest concert, Good Vibrations, at the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre (Oak Bay High School) on Friday, May 31 and Sunday, June 2.
“Don’t get me wrong, classical choral music is fantastic, but our choir presents classic pops music that’s lively and fun, and that people know and love,” said Doman, who acts as the director and producer of the group shows.
The upcoming concerts feature custom arrangements of classic pops tunes by Dan Fogelberg, The Beach Boys, Trooper, The Carpenters, Captain & Tennille and The Rascals. It also features the world premiere of a new choral arrangement of Now And Then, a newly discovered Beatles tune released just last year.
