The latest addition to the Chemainus murals went up above the Back To Britain Shop on Chemainus Road Saturday.
Businesses proprietors Mark Myers and Sandy Pollard conducted the installation along with Stephen Parson, Ron Waller and Ken Simmonds.
The new mural, labelled No. 43 in the historical series, depicts the Kew Gardens Flagpole and was done by artist Cim MacDonald.
It’s unique for a couple of reasons.
“It’s the only one that’s sepia,” said MacDonald at the scene.
It was also put into place on brackets rather than against a wall so it provides a bit of a 3-D effect.
MacDonald said it took about two weeks of eight-hour days to complete the mural.
“It was a fun project,” she said. “I did some research to make sure I had everything as it should be.”
The scene depicts a 225-foot long Douglas fir that was cut on MacMillan Bloedel holdings behind Copper Canyon camp. It was a gift by the B.C. Loggers’ Association and other coast forest industries to the Royal Botanical Gardens to be erected as a flagpole.
The spar was erected on the site at Kew on Nov. 5, 1959.
