WATCH: Island residents have chance to be soldiers for a day in Nanaimo

Canadian Armed Forces event takes place Saturday, April 7, at Nanaimo Military Camp

People craving a taste of military life will have an opportunity to whet their appetites Saturday, April 7, at Nanaimo Military Camp.

A Soldier For A Day event will offer attendees the Canadian Armed Forces reservist experience, with fitness testing, equipment and vehicle exhibits and information on different opportunities available through reserve units in Nanaimo.

Cpl. Tanner MacKinnon said the event has taken place since 1996.

“We do things like firearm safety and some small arms training as well as [individual meal pack] ration consumption and cooking and we also do a display from each and every unit here in town,” said MacKinnon. “So we’ve got the Canadian Scottish Infantry Regiment, we’ve got the 39 Signal Regiment, which is communication specialists, and we’ve got the 5th Field Artillery Regiment here as as well.”

The Army Reserve consists of people who volunteer for the Armed Forces in a part-time capacity.

Saturday’s event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. People wishing to participate must be 15 years old or older and register at Soldier For A Day Nanaimo at www.eventbrite.ca.

Nanaimo Military Camp is located at 709 Nanaimo Lakes Road.
