Vancouver Island University’s soccer sides had a perfect weekend on their home pitch to end their home schedules in PacWest play.

The VIU Mariners women’s and men’s squads both won their matches Saturday and Sunday at NDSS Community Field against the Langara Falcons.

The women won 4-2 on Saturday and then 2-1 on Sunday, while the men were 3-1 winners Saturday and then closed out a 4-0 shutout on Sunday.

VIU’s women started the weekend fast as star striker Chloe Gummer scored a hat trick in the first half and Olivia Mazurenko also tallied. The next day it was Kate Reynolds and Mazurenko with the goals.

The Mariners men got a pair of goals from Shun Takano and one from Billy Bagiopoulos in Saturday’s match, and the next day, Michael Heppelle scored twice and Bagiopoulos and Karson Kroetsch also found the back of the net.

For the women, the results kept them with an undefeated record (7-0-3) with only two road games left to go, while the men (6-2-2) strengthened their first-place standing. The results also lifted the Mariners men to a No. 2 national ranking, while the Mariners women are ranked fifth by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

GAME ON … VIU’s soccer teams have a bye week and then finish the PacWest season Oct. 19-20 with road matches against the Capilano Blues and the Douglas Royals.
