Make it five losses in a row for the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
Fresh off a 5-1 loss to Victoria Grizzlies at the Q Centre Oct. 14, the Caps were looking to turned it around at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack Oct. 17 against the Cranbrook Bucks and Oct. 18 against the Trail Smoke Eaters. What they got instead was a 9-2 loss and a 3-2 loss, respectively.
It was back at home to host Chilliwack On Oct. 21 and Nanaimo on Oct. 22 but the results were more of the same despite the Capitals playing better hockey.
“We played very well on the weekend,” head coach Brian Passmore said. “It’s process over outcome for us though. We fell on the wrong side and that’s just learning as a group, but I thought we dominated play for most of those games against Chilliwack and Nanaimo and we had a lot of careless moments with the puck and it ended up in the net.”
The Chiefs ended up beating the Caps 5-3 and the Clippers took the win with a 7-4 score.
“It’s a little bit frustrating,” Passmore admitted, “But we’ll work on mental toughness and we’ll battle through and keep getting better.”
The Caps next play at home on Sunday, Oct. 30, when they welcome the Coquitlam Express. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
“We haven’t played them yet but they’re playing pretty good,” Passmore said. “We’ll practice all week and keep getting better.”
The Capitals added to their roster last week, signing 19-year-old Cole Melady from the Bonnyville Pontiacs in exchange for future considerations.
Melady began the season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs but was traded to Bonnyville over the weekend before being acquired by the Caps.
“Cole is a veteran player in the league, a mature player that is tough to battle against,” Passmore noted. “Cole plays a physically intense brand of hockey and competes hard in all areas of the ice. A strong player and a great character addition to the roster.”
