Nanaimo's semi-pro soccer teams made history, playing their first matches as Nanaimo United FC.
The B.C. League 1 sides, previously known as Harbourside FC, started their respective regular seasons on Saturday, April 12, with home matches at Q'unq'inuqwstuxw Stadium against Coquitlam Evolution FC.
The Nanaimo United women lost 3-1 in the early match, with Niobe Darku scoring her team's only goal in the 75th minute. The United men then lost 1-0 after surrendering the only goal of the match in the second minute. Matthew McConnach tended goal for the home side.
GAME ON … United visits Altitude FC on Sunday, April 20. Next home action is April 26, when Burnaby FC visits Q'unq'inuqwstuxw for a women's match at 1 p.m. and a men's match at 3:30 p.m.
