Latest big finish leaves WHL Royals short of victory

Victoria plays hockey home and home against Vancouver this Friday and Saturday

Big third periods have become a thing for the Victoria Royals.

Their latest fantastic finish in Prince George left them short, however, as they lost 5-4 to the Cougars on Tuesday night.

Max Kryski scored the winner at the 14:24 mark ending a flurry of activity in the Prince George end that saw their 4-1 third period lead evaporate.

After Victoria’s Igor Martynov, with his 12th of the season, and the Cougars’ Cole Moberg traded goals early in the final frame, the Royals went to work, scoring three times in under two minutes to tie it up by the 6:54 mark.

The goals by Dino Kambeitz, with his seventh, Tyler Soy (13th) and Kaid Oliver (5th) gave the game a very different complexion.

The Royals outshot the Cougars 19-7 in the period and 45-25 overall, but struggled on the power play, scoring just once in eight opportunities.

Prince George went 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Ryan Schoettler, with a pair, and Vladislav Mikhalchuk also scored for the Cougars.

The Royals scored four times in the third period Sunday night in Prince George and won 5-4 in overtime, and tallied five goals in the third in a 10-3 home win over the Kootenay Ice last week.

Victoria is in Langley this Friday night (Dec. 15) to play the Giants and plays Vancouver in the return engagement on Saturday (7:05 p.m.) at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
