Two former Belmont teammates represented B.C. at the world’s largest amateur beach volleyball tournament in Seaside, Oregon.

Belmont grad Savannah Purdy, and her partner from Victoria, Erin Mutch, went undefeated and took the gold in the U18 division, taking the final game 21-12, 21-16.

Belmont grad Hannah May and her partner from Vancouver, Arden Copping, finished in a tie for third, after Hannah and Purdy met in the semifinals.

Gracie May, a Belmont student going into Grade 12, along with her beach partner, Sara Ostojic from Vancouver, played in the U17 division and tied for fifth, losing their final game 21-9, 21-18.

The B.C. Beach Volleyball Championships that took place at Vancouver’s Spanish Banks, saw two former Belmont teammates up against each other in the finals.

Purdy and Mutch won gold in provincials in a tie-breaker (21-16, 15-21, 15-10) and Gracie and Ostojic took home the silver medal. Mike Toakley, Belmont volleyball coach, said Purdy and Mutch also won gold at the B.C. Summer Games to win a “triple crown of sorts.”

Gracie and Ostojic will by competing in the U16 division 2018 Youth and Senior Beach Nationals in Toronto. Toakley said the duo have been competing in U17 and U18 divisions up until now, but because they have late birthdays they are able to compete as U16s at nationals.

Toakley said Hannah came down with a virus and will not be going to nationals, but did qualify. Hannah, who has committed to play volleyball at Grant McEwan in Edmonton, will play her first post-secondary year at Camosun College this fall.
