The host Cowichan Secondary Thunderbirds are seeded third going into the AAA field hockey provincial championships at the Cowichan Sportsplex and Shawnigan Lake School this week.

The T-Birds will play in a pool with top-seeded Handsworth, as well as South Delta, Gleneagle and G.W. Graham. The other pool will feature Island champions Oak Bay, who are seeded second, along with Kelowna, Sir Winston Churchill, Heritage Woods and Sentinel.

The Handsworth Royals are the defending provincial champions, having won the banner in 2019. The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The T-Birds will open the tournament against G.W. Graham at Shawnigan on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The rest of their games will be played at the Sportsplex, beginning at 2:30 on Wednesday when they face Gleneagle. On Thursday, Cowichan will take on South Delta at 10 a.m and Handsworth at 7 p.m.

Playoff games will begin at both venues on Friday at 8:30 a.m. The third-place game is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the Sportsplex, followed at 4 p.m. by the gold-medal game.

The AA provincial championships were held at UVic last week. Brentwood College School finished third, beating Crofton House in a shootout in the bronze medal game, while Shawnigan Lake School placed seventh.
