Dimitri Mikrogiannakis might not be the best the B.C. Hockey League has to offer, but he was close.

The Cowichan Valley Capitals defenceman is a BCHL all-star, and a finalist for two of the league’s top awards, falling just short when the winners were announced Wedneday.

It was announced last Friday that the second-year Cap and alternate captain is up for the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy as BCHL MVP, and for the Defensive Award as top defenceman, and on Tuesday he was named a First-Team All-Star.

The honours are well deserved, said head coach Mike Vandekamp.

“Dimitri has been the leader in all areas for our defence corps,” he stated. “He’s had a very good offensive year but is also a strong defensive defenceman and brings a physical presence every night. He is very deserving of this recognition.”

Mikrogiannakis finished third among BCHL defencemen with 46 points (seven goals and 39 assists) in 58 games. He was second among all Caps, behind Luciano Wilson’s 53 points. The 20-year-old from Aurora, Ont. is committed to the Rochester Institute of Technology for next season.

The MVP award went to league scoring leader Kent Johnson of the Trail Smoke Eaters, already a top prospect for the 2021 NHL draft, and the defensive award was awared to Akito Hirose of the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
