Monday, June 1 was the first day the B.C. Hockey League could approve trades, and the Cowichan Valley Capitals jumped into action right away, shipping forward Zach Brooks to the West Kelowna Warriors to complete a deadline-day trade in January that brought defenceman Austin Chorney to Cowichan in exchange for blueliner Maxime Dumas and future considerations.

Brooks played 57 games with the Caps this past season, compiling 12 goals and 27 points, then added a goal and two assists in five playoff games. Chorney had a goal and an assist in 15 games after he joined the Caps, then scored twice in five playoff appearances.

The Caps also recently announced the signing of 2002-born goaltender Jayden Shull for the 2020-21 season. A product of North Vancouver, Shull spent the last two seasons playing for the North West Hawks of the B.C. Major Midget League. In 2019-20, he played 20 games with a 13-6-1 record, a 2.43 goals-against average, and two shutouts.

“I’m super excited to be joining the Capitals, they were the first team to AP me and show me, and give me attention,” Shull said. “It’s going to be an awesome place to play.”

The Caps are thrilled to add Shull to the goalie stable. Ben Howard is also eligible to return after playing most of last season as Zach Borgiel’s backup.

“We are really excited to add a goalie of Jayden’s calibre to our roster,” new Cowichan head coach Geoff Grimwood said. “His character and commitment to the game are exactly what we are looking for in players who wear the Capitals sweater.”
