Clippers work overtime to tie, win on road trip

Nanaimo tied the Victoria Grizzlies 3-3, beat the Powell River Kings 4-3

The Nanaimo Clippers went above-and-beyond 60-minute efforts against their primary competition in the Island Division.

The city’s B.C. Hockey League team earned a tie and a win on a road trip this past weekend, drawing 3-3 with the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday down the Malahat and then edging the Powell River Kings 4-3 the following night in another overtime game.

Jordan Wharrie was the hero in Saturday’s win at Hap Parker Arena, tallying three and a half minutes into the first OT frame. Brady Lynn scored twice in the contest and Preston Brodziak had Nanaimo’s other marker. Taz Burman made 30 saves as his team was outshot 33-26.

There were heroics the night before, too, as Cal Babych scored his second goal of the game with seven seconds left in regulation. Brodziak had the other goal and Burman made 36 saves as shots were 43-39 in favour of Nanaimo.

GAME ON … The Clippers host the Grizzlies on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. For tickets, visit or call 250-751-0593.
