Cowichan Valley Capitals defender Aaron Brown has been named to the Team West roster for the BC Hockey League’s 2023 Top Prospects Game Friday, Jan. 20 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton.
The game features 40 of the BCHL’s top NHL draft-eligible players, split into two teams which compete against each other for 60 minutes to determine a winner in front of fans, pro scouts and NCAA coaches.
Brown has already committed to Division I Quinnipiac University Bobcats hockey team but is now draft eligible.
Brown and the Capitals played twice over the weekend, first in Prince George on Friday, Dec. 9.
Luke Strickland opened the scoring on the powerplay after the Spruce Kings took a penalty in the first two minutes of the game. Kai Dunits and Williams Elias got assists on the play.
The Caps fell behind 3-1 early in the second period but Massimo Lombardi potted his ninth of the year, unassisted, to bring his team a little closer.
Prince George scored again to restore their two-goal lead but Cowichan’s Logan Camp netted his second of the year from Elias and Strickland to once again pull their team to within one.
That’s as close as they would get, however, with Prince George going on to score twice in the third period — once on the power play and once into an empty net — to win the game 6-3.
The following night, Cowichan found themselves in Merritt to face the Centennials.
The Capitals fired 27 shots at Merritt’s netminder but none into the back of the net. The Caps were ultimately shut out 6-0.
Cowichan ends their 2022 schedule back on Vancouver Island with a home game starting at 7 p.m. against Powell River on Dec. 16 before playing the Clippers in Nanaimo the following night.
After Christmas, the puck drops at 7 p.m. at The Stick against Alberni Valley on Dec. 30 and then the Capitals wrap up the year at the Q Centre in Victoria to play the Grizzlies on New Year’s Eve.
