B.C. Lions star helps Nanaimo players hone their game

Nanaimo football players had a chance to learn from the best receiver in B.C.

Emmanuel Arceneaux of the B.C. Lions was special guest coach at the Jay Prepchuk Quarterback/Receivers Camp on Sunday at John Barsby Secondary School.

Arceneaux said even though it’s not high school football season, it’s “very important” that players work on their game at any time of year.

“As a receiver, you’ve got to always want to catch balls, work on getting in and out of your breaks, things like that … It’s got to be something that you constantly rep. Rep, rep, rep all the routes to where you can do it with your eyes closed,” he said. “It’s good for them to be able to get that kind of training in so when the season comes, they’re moving at a whole other speed.”

Even just one afternoon is enough to be able to pass along useful information, Arceneaux said. While kids tend to just want to play, he tries to stress that the “skill work” will help them perfect their craft and it’s something that he works on to this day.

“I want to coach them up, let them know why they run a route this way or how this can help benefit them,” he said.

Arceneaux said coaching is something he wants to do once he’s done playing. On Sunday he was all smiles working with Nanaimo’s up-and-coming talent.

“These kids are very talented and you can tell that they want to learn, so that’s always a good thing,” he said.
