In loving memory ~
It is with great sorrow we say goodbye to Yvonne Edith Dykes was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on December 14th, 2022. Yvonne's husband, Thomas Smith Dykes pre-deceased her on August 14th, 2013, just days short of their 44 years of marriage. Yvonne is survived by her son, Kenneth Joseph Somers (Lynetta), her daughter, Katherine Marie Wood (Alex), her grandchildren, Heather Amanda Wood, Sarah Alexis Ross, Thomas Alexander Ross, Candice May Somers, Nathan Carry Somers, Angela Wales and Samara Somers, and her niece, Paula Bourque (Roger), step-children, Gail Lynn Lewis, Dorothy May Edmundson and Cheryl Leigh Pyne, and step-grandchildren, Douglas Alan Sparrow, Colleen Whitley and Karen Nadine Park.
Yvonne was born in 1937 in Moncton, New Brunswick, where she married and had 2 wonderful children, Ken and Kathy. Sadly, she had to raise Ken and Kathy as a single mom until she met and married Tom. Together they lived and worked their farm in Peace River, Alberta, with Yvonne raising the children, looking after the home, and helping with the animals and fields. Yvonne also enjoyed her job working at the Sunshine Home in Peace River and also bull cooking in the oil fields. The work was hard, but Yvonne was made of sterner stuff than most and had many stories to share of her's and Tom's life together up North.
Then came the good years of retirement in Campbell River. Fishing was Tom's and Yvonne's passion. Yvonne affectionately became known as the " Fisherwoman of the Campbell River Pier", bringing in more salmon than any, including Tom, much to his chagrin.
With Tom's passing, Yvonne's health slowly worsened over the years, but Yvonne was always well-loved by her Discovery Community Church family, friends and neighbours. Her wonderful sense of humour and turn of a good story kept many visitors on her doorstep. But a visit from Ken or Kathy always made her heart most joyful.
The last year of Yvonne's life was sadly spent in and out of the hospital and eventually moving into Evergreen Seniors Home where she received such loving care from the wonderful staff there. It is with great gratitude we thank all the staff at Evergreen Seniors Home who made Yvonne's last days content, loved and social, just as she had lived her life.
There is joy and celebration in our hearts knowing Yvonne is now in heaven joined with Tom once again.
A Memorial will be held for Yvonne at Discovery Community Church, 250 - 10th Ave., Campbell River, B.C., on Wednesday, January 11th, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
