In Loving Memory ~
After a terrible struggle with Lewy Body Dementia, Win is finally at Peace. He leaves me to mourn, his wife of 48+ years, Lezlie. He also leaves his nephew Robert (Jodi), nephew Ryan (Julie) and niece Meghan (Brandon and twins, Charlie and Theo). Also left to mourn is his beloved cousin Rochelle Watts and extended family and friends.
Not only was Win a most caring, loving husband, but he was also selfless, always putting his friends and others before himself. This showed in the many animals we rescued over the years which filled our home with a cat and gentle giants, mostly Rottweilers.
Win was born in Vancouver and spent an idyllic childhood on Sea Island, Richmond with his lifelong friend Drew Parker who predeceased him. As a young man, he joined the Seaforth Highlanders where he proved to be a Marksman and was honoured to have been inspected by Colonel Bell-Irving, DSO, and LC Cecil Merritt, VC.
Afterward, Win began mining exploration and logging where he had adventures and misadventures with his great friend Dennis Hocking and wonderful times with the entire Hocking family. As an aircraft refueller, he met his friend and fellow adventurer to the end, Jack Salzborn, with whom he enjoyed adventures and misadventures canoeing the B.C. coast.
Lastly, he became a Vancouver Transit Operator for the next "30 years, 2 months, and 11 days" as he liked to tell people. He earned a Safe Driving award for his daily diligence behind the wheel.
Win loved animals and volunteered at Wildlife Rescue for many years while we lived in Burnaby. After retirement we moved to the Cowichan Valley. Here, Win volunteered as a Cancer Driver and at the Cowichan Regional Visitor Centre, impressing visitors with his knowledge of the local history and geography but also with his knowledge of the visitors' own history and geography. He also volunteered at the SPCA where his love of animals continued.
The great story teller has been silenced and family, friends and neighbours are left with our memories.
Respecting Win's adamant instructions, there will be no service or Celebration of Life.
