June 5, 1928 - November 15, 2020
Bill Silvester passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Fellburn Care Cetnre in Burnaby, BC.
Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 37 years, Margie in 1986, his granddaughter, Karrie and his brother, Alan.
Bill is survived by his sons Danny (Avis) and Gary, his grandchildren: Hollie (Scott), Billy and Char (Clay) and three great-grandchildren: Kody, Grace and Abby. He leaves behind his sister, Bubby, his brother Norman and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were like family.
Bill was born at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver on June 5, 1928 to parents William Thomas Silvester and Lillian Rose Howe.
Affectionately nicknamed Beezle as a youngster, Bill attended Beaconsfield elementary where he met his childhood sweetheart and love of his life Margaret (Margie) O'Leary. Bill and Margie were married on April 23, 1949 and built a home next to Bill's parents that would end up being their forever home. Bill's home and yard were a source of joy for him throughout his life.
When he was 14 years old, Bill began collecting World War 1 artifacts and memorabilia and, over the years, amassed a renowned collection. His collecting took him on many journeys and created lasting friendships. Bill's collection aka "the museum" was a constant in his life and kept him busy for 78 years.
Bill began work in the forestry industry in 1944 at Eburne Sawmill in Marpole and was proud of his 47-year career at Eburne. His retirement in February 1991 was a bittersweet moment but he had many great stories and many friendships from his days at Eburne that he cherished.
In his retirement years, when he was not working on his collection, Bill enjoyed puttering in his yard, spending time with family and friends, travelling and spending time on Vancouver Island.
Bill was an incredibly special man who touched the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Whether you were on the morning phone list, someone who dropped by for a tea (or something stronger), a neighbour, a former co-worker, a hunting buddy, a fellow collector or however you knew Bill, your life is better because of his friendship. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. There will be no service or gathering at this time.
