William (Bill) Grote was born in Grossenheidorn, Germany, on March 16th, 1939. He died in Duncan, B.C., on April 4th, 2018. Bill is survived by his remaining sister, Eve, and nieces and nephews in Germany.

Bill came to Canada in 1957, working as a farm hand near Toronto, then as a cowboy in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

Arriving in Cowichan Bay, he found work in the forest industry, first with Fault Towing on their booms and tugs, then with MacMillan Bloedel / Weyerhaeuser, driving their monstrous off-road logging trucks in the Shawnigan Division.

Marrying Lucille in 1972, they called their farm in Cobble Hill home for three decades. In his retirement, Bill carried on helping at his old farm up until his death.

He will be missed.

There will be a Celebration of Life gathering for Bill on Wednesday, May 2nd at the Cow Cafe in the hotel in Cowichan Bay, 1681 Cowichan Bay Rd., from 2:30 to 4:30.

Please bring along your stories of Bill.
