March 30, 1924 - December 27, 2019
Wilhelmina passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in her own home in Comox just after Christmas. Her remarkable life began next to the Rhine River, in Vorschoten, Netherlands, the ninth child in a family of 13 children. She reached adulthood during a time of conflict and deprivation in Europe. After the war she became a nurse at the sanatorium in Nordwijk, Holland. In 1951, she and her husband Peter (d. 1997) and one-year old daughter set off for a new life in Canada. This brought her successively to several communities in the Fraser Valley, then to Alberni, Nanaimo, Victoria and Comox.
Her passing leaves a huge gap in the hearts of all her family members. Her daughters and sons: Hennie, Joan Cornelia, William (d. 2012) & Lynn, and Paul, and their spouses. Her grandchildren and step- grandchildren: Christy, Donovan, Peter, Danielle, Cameron, Tabatha (d. 2010), Christopher, Tenille, Jeremy, Alisha, Eliza, Charlotte, Yared. Her great-grandchildren: Jordan, Kelsey, Tavia, Bailey, Ayden, Emma, Maya, Avery, Rowan, Jacob, Krista, Ava, Anika, Alivia, James, Ryker, Amelia, Mihai, Stefan. Her great-great grandchildren: Jaxxon, Bradie, Macey and Carter. We have all been inspired by her loving-kindness, faith and resilience.
Burial has taken place in Royal Oak Burial Park, Saanich, with most family members present.
A celebration of Wilhelmina's life will be held at St. Georges United Church, 506 Sixth Street (at Fitzgerald) in Courtenay, on Wednesday, January 22, at 14:30 (2:30 pm).
