December 7, 1931 - September 12, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Val passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice with his loving family by his side. He is survived by Olive, his loving wife of 66 years, son Douglas (Linda, Kiernan), daughters Lori and Patricia, and his beloved cat, Katie.
Val spent his early years in Nelson, BC. He was 9 years old when the family moved to Vancouver Island and Royston when his parents purchased the Ideal Beach Resort. He attended school in Royston and Courtenay until 1946 when the family moved to Victoria. Upon graduation from Vic High, he began a career with the Bank of Commerce in Victoria and Calgary. He joined the RCAF in 1955 and served as a navigator on the CF-100 until his retirement in 1974. He turned to a second career with the Bank of Montreal and retired from the Duncan branch in 1991.
Following his retirement Val enjoyed time spent with the family on sailing trips around the Gulf Islands, renovating the family home, building furniture and helping on projects for family and friends. He spent many happy hours in his backyard workshop. He served on the Board of Directors of the Cowichan Valley Home Support and volunteered with the Air Cadet Association in Duncan. He was on the Executive of the Maple Bay Yacht Club and the Duncan branch of FSNA (Federal Retirees Association).
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jan Malherbe, Dr. Shaun Humphreys, the doctors and caring team at the BC Cancer Clinic, the Luxcare staff at The Victorian, and the Victoria Hospice team for the love and support given to Val throughout his illness.
No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA, Victoria Hospice or a charity of your choice.
